MEMPHIS, TN. – Ryan Silverfield and the Memphis Tigers are competing in the 65th Annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl against a familiar face. The Tigers will go head-to-head versus Matt Campbell and the Iowa State Cyclones. The 2023 bowl game marks the second meeting between the two teams. The Tigers (10-3) last met Iowa State (8-5) in the 2017 bowl game, which resulted in a loss for Memphis (21-20).
This year’s bowl game makes the Tiger’s 10th straight year of earning a bowl bid, the longest current streak among non-Power Five teams, and 9th longest overall. Memphis went 9-3 overall and 6-2 in AAC play. As for Iowa State, who went 7-5 this season, the Cyclones will take their 6th bowl trip within seven seasons.
Not only is this a sight to see, but there are quite a few players to watch for on the field this bowl game. Starting with Jeremiah Cooper of Iowa State, the sophomore defensive back averaged 41 tackles (23 solo), 1 forced fumble, and 5 interceptions. But will he be a match for any of the Tigers? Linebacker Chandler Martin is a force to be reckoned with. Martin has achieved 86 tackles (59 solo), 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 interceptions. He leads the team in tackles. Let’s not forget about Seth Henigan (3,519 passing yards), Blake Watson (1,045 rushing yards), Roc Taylor (981 receiving yards), and Cameron Smith (3 int.).
