In the sun-drenched lanes of Fort Myers, Florida, a potent force was taking shape on the gridiron, a force that would scale the heights of collegiate football and proudly bear the banner of Memphis, Tennessee. That force is Derrick Hunter Jr., a defensive lineman whose journey through the expansive landscape of collegiate football has seen him don the colors of Texas A&M, Hinds Community College, and finally, Memphis. Throughout this journey, one thing has remained consistent – Hunter’s unwavering commitment to his game and the legacy he is shaping.

Hunter Jr., a towering figure at 6’5″ and weighing in at 265 pounds, recently made an announcement that sent waves of excitement through the ranks of Memphis fans and his fellow teammates. In the 2023 season, Hunter Jr.’s presence on the field was palpable. Over the course of 12 games for Memphis, he amassed 15 total tackles, with 10 being solo. This performance was a testament to his raw talent and dedication and the skills honed during his stint at Hinds Community College.

At Hinds, Hunter Jr. was a standout player, earning the No. 6 spot in the 247Sports junior college composite rankings and securing the No. 3 position among JUCO defensive linemen. His statistics there were impressive, with eight games yielding 27 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, one pass defended, and one vital fumble recovery.

However, Hunter Jr.’s journey began long before his time at Hinds and Memphis. His collegiate football career kicked off at Texas A&M, where he played from 2019 to 2021. During that period, he participated in 18 games, contributing four tackles and one tackle for loss to the Aggies’ defensive efforts.

Before his college career, Hunter Jr. was already making waves as a formidable player. As a four-star recruit in 2019, he earned the No. 257 slot in the ESPN 300 and garnered recognition as the 18th-best defensive tackle in the country and the 40th overall player in Florida by ESPN.

When discussing his decision to return to Memphis for his senior season, Hunter Jr. expressed a clear vision and purpose, stating, “The decision wasn’t hard. I want to help build something special here, and there is work that I still need to handle on the field and off the field.”

It’s evident that his ambitions extend beyond the gridiron. His dedication to personal and academic growth shines through his commitment to furthering his education. He said, “Coming back for my masters was a big deal.
