The 2022 season marked the first time, since the 1992 season, that the Redbirds franchise would play in Charlotte. In former seasons in these franchises’ history, these two teams were competing in the Southern League. This second series of this season began on Tuesday and concluded from Truist Park in Charlotte this afternoon. Memphis would wrap up the series win with a 4-3 victory over the Knights while falling today 11-4. In this series, the Redbirds accomplished many feats.

Charlotte- Home of The Long Ball For Memphis

Memphis has hit a professional baseball-leading 93 home runs thus far in 2022 leading the New York Yankees by 14 who have hit 79 this season. Coming into today’s game the Redbirds had hit 30 of their 90 home runs [33%] in Charlotte. Memphis has now hit a home run in 14 straight games which is their longest streak of the season. The Redbirds became the fastest team in all of baseball to hit 50 home runs doing so in only 26 games. In the month of April Memphis hit 50 long balls falling just four short of the franchise record of 54 set in August of 2019. The Redbirds are currently on pace to hit 254 dingers which would break the franchise record of 200 which was set during the 2019 season.

Connor Capel is On Fire!

The Katy, Texas native has been since May 8th and has become one of the Redbirds’ best hitters. Since that time, he has had a .351 batting average with five doubles, three triples, three home runs, 14 runs scored, and six stolen bases in the 19 games played. This combined with Capel hitting an insane .462 on balls in play has him and this offense giving opposing pitchers fits at the plate. In 2022 Capel has a.269 batting average with 7 home runs, 21 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases in his forty-two appearances.

Road Woes? Not The Redbirds

Some teams can find it difficult to play away from their respective home stadiums. While AutoZone Park is one of the nicest stadiums in all of Triple-A Baseball Memphis has found success on the road this season by holding a 19-11 record. These 19 wins on the road lead all the Triple-A and 2nd most in all the minor leagues with Myrtle Beach in Single-A with 20. Memphis reached double-digit wins on the road at the 6th fastest rate doing so in 16 games. As a visiting team, the Redbirds have hit a minor league-leading 60 home runs as well as most bases on the road with 524.

Up Next

Memphis returns to AutoZone Park on Tuesday to begin a 12-game homestand starting with the Durham Bulls who will visit from June 7th- 12th. Memphis holds a season series lead of 5-1 after a six-game series from April 26th- to May 1st. This will be the only visit for Durham to the Bluff City this season as these two teams will meet again in Durham from July 4th-10th.
