Memphis Softball Gets First Conference Win, 8-5, In Tulsa

Memphis Softball made the trip to Tulsa this weekend to take on the Hurricanes for a weekend series. With losses on Friday, 9-7, and Saturday, 7-0, the Tigers were looking to get a win in the final contest of the series. On Sunday, Memphis would snap their current six-game losing streak and get their 6th with, 8-5, over Tulsa. This is the Tiger’s first win in conference play this season.  We will discuss some stats from the game and players who contributed, what this win can mean for this team, and what is next on the schedule. We will start with some stats from today and the players who stood out. ,

Stats From Today 

The Mound 

Mikayla Hoschak made her eleventh start of the season and made rhe most of it. She would pitch a full seven-inning game allowing 12 hits, 5 earned runs, 1 HR, and finish with one strikeout. Horschak would face 35 Hurricanes today at the plate and it would take her 93 pitches to close them out. Of those pitches, 61 were for strikes giving Hoschak a 65.6 strike percentage on the day. She would throw 32 balls today as well. She finished the day 3/7 versus leadoff hitters and 6/20 with runners on base today. With two outs she was 2/8 and versus a left-handed batter, she finished 5/13. Horschak now has three on the season complete games on the season. It was a complete performance in this complete game for Hoschak on the mound. 

The Lady Tigers have stellar defense behind her today in the win. Let’s take a look at some stats and players from the field. 

The Field 

Memphis would make some highlight plays today getting the win. While the Tigers would have two errors on the day, they would finish with 21 putouts, 1 double play, and 7 assists to finish the game. These numbers compute a .933 fielding percentage. The above pitching would allow this defense to allow 13 fly balls, 6 ground balls, and 1 extra-base hit today to the Hurricanes. 

Linsey Hargis would turn a smooth double play in the bottom of the fifth to close out the inning for Memphis. Hargis would finish the day with 5 put-outs, 2 assists, and 1 error on the day. 

Defensively today, Memphis played with tenacity and aggression. With the staff, this program has, if this defense can continue to play as they did today they can create some havoc for opponents on the schedule. 

The Plate

Memphis would show their claws today from the plate.  The Tigers would finish 12/31 from the plate which is a .387 average. Memphis would have 7 RBIS, 3 doubles, 2 walks, 2 hit by pitch, and leave 8 runners on base today. The Tigers would move runners “station to station” all day on the base paths. To further this point, Memphis finished 2/3 with the bases loaded, and in advancement opportunities, they were 11/22 or 50%. 

Leading the Tigers at the plate was Alaina Zavala, who went 3/4 on the day with 2 singles, a double, and 1 RBI. Joining Zavala with one RBI on the day were Sam Ibison, Presley Morris, and Madison Berner. Meagan Chism would finish 1/3 today with a 3-run double in what was a four-run inning for Memphis. 

What Is Next? 

Memphis will continue the conference slate as Wichita State comes to town. These two will play a Thursday through Saturday weekend schedule. The schedule for the games is below. 

Thursday – 6 PM  – Jeopardy Night

Friday – 2 PM – ESPN+ – MVP DAY

Saturday – 12 PM – ESPN+ – EGG HUNT
