The NWA Championship Is Back on the Clock. Friday Will Show Whether It Can Finish What Rain Stopped.
It will begin a second chance. The 2026 Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G opens its 20th edition with a $3 million purse, 18 Solheim Cup participants and a field built to make national noise. It also opens with the memory of a tournament that never reached its finish.
Last year, heavy rain made Pinnacle unplayable after one completed round. The LPGA cancelled the remaining competition. No official winner was named. No Rolex Women’s World Ranking points were awarded. No Race to CME Globe points were awarded. The scoreboard existed. A championship did not.
Friday Is Not Just Another Opening Round
Opening rounds are usually about potential. Players arrive with fresh energy. The leaderboard is open. Fans look for early birdies and familiar names. Tournament stories begin to take shape. This Friday carries more weight.
The NWA Championship needs 36 completed holes to create an official result. It needs 54 to produce the kind of champion the event’s 20th anniversary deserves. That does not mean players will be thinking about last year with every swing. Most will not. But the event itself cannot ignore the context.
The 2025 cancellation did not just take away a trophy. It took away the competitive arc that makes tournament golf compelling: a Friday start, a Saturday cut, a Sunday decision. The 2026 edition gets to build that arc again.
The Field Gives the Tournament a Real National Stage
Eighteen Solheim Cup participants are in Rogers this week. Charley Hull, Rose Zhang, Céline Boutier, Linn Grant, Leona Maguire, Angel Yin, Jennifer Kupcho and others arrive after competing in one of women’s golf’s biggest team events. Now they will have to handle a different challenge.
At the Solheim Cup, players had teammates. They had flags. They had a match-play format that reset every hole. At Pinnacle, every shot stays on the scorecard.
The NWA Championship will also have former winners, major-championship pedigree and an Arkansas contingent led by former Razorbacks Gaby Lopez, Brooke Matthews and Maria Fassi, plus current Arkansas star Maria José Marin. That creates a field with multiple stories waiting to emerge.
A Solheim Cup star could carry team-event momentum into an individual title run. A former champion could prove course history matters. A local player could make Sunday personal. A new name could begin a national breakthrough.
The First Round Will Set the Tone
Pinnacle has a history of producing birdies. Nasa Hataoka set the tournament record at 21-under in 2018. Austin Ernst won at 20-under in 2020. Ryu Hae-ran won at 19-under in 2023. The course can become a place where a player needs birdies simply to avoid falling behind.
That makes Friday important. A player does not need to win the event in the first round. But she can establish whether she has the approach play, putting confidence and patience to survive a weekend where the leaderboard may move quickly.
The tournament cannot erase 2025. It should not try. But it can write a different ending. Friday is where that story begins.
