Hull Finishes Strong In Malaysia; Matthews Leaves With An Ace And A Different Result

Charley Hull’s score was settled before her place on the leaderboard was. She finished Sunday at the Maybank Championship with a 4-under 68 and briefly sat tied seventh. By the time everyone was done, she had a share of ninth at 13 under. That is the result that goes into the season record: a top 10, built with a strong opening and a good response on the final day.

Hull Finishes Strong In Malaysia; Matthews Leaves With An Ace And A Different Result

Hull started the week with rounds of 66 and 69 before an even-par 72 on Saturday left her at 9 under. Sunday’s 68 brought her back into the group at 13 under and earned her $51,846. She did not get close enough to make the finish uncomfortable for Miyu Yamashita, who won at 22 under. But after Saturday slowed her progress, Hull made something of the final round.

For a player we follow throughout the season, that distinction matters. Not every week is a title chase. Sometimes the story is what a player does after the chance to win has become remote. Hull finished better than she played the day before.

Matthews’ Week Had Two Different Stories

Brooke Matthews supplied one of the tournament’s memorable moments Friday with a hole-in-one. She also finished tied 72nd at 4 over. Both belong in the account of her week. The ace deserves its own attention. It was a shot worth celebrating and a moment that stood apart from the ordinary work of putting a round together.

It did not turn the tournament into a strong overall finish. Matthews opened with 75, followed with 71 and shot 72 on Saturday. She finished the week at 4 over and earned $5,887. For the Rogers native and former Razorback, our coverage should have room for both the highlight and the result. One does not cancel the other.

Kang Follows Saturday’s 65 With An Even-Par Finish

Minji Kang finished tied 21st at 11 under, earning $33,512. Her third-round 65 gave her a chance to move higher Sunday, but she finished at the same tournament total. That is different from backing up with an over-par round. Kang held her score while other players moved past her.

Melanie Green finished tied 63rd at 1 over and earned $7,095. During the final round, she had improved to that total with a 2-under score through 14 holes; 1 over was also where she finished the tournament.

Malaysia leaves four different results for the players we tracked closely: Hull’s top 10, Kang’s finish just outside the top 20, Green’s final-day improvement and Matthews’ ace during a difficult competitive week. The season record needs all of it—not just the best shot or the most flattering number.
