This time, Memphis did not need to spend the second half repairing the first. Marcus Stokes accounted for 5 touchdowns; the Tigers scored on all 6 red-zone possessions and a 14–0 fourth quarter completed a 49–22 victory over Army before an announced crowd of 32,502.

Memphis Finishes What It Starts in a 49–22 Win Over Army

The performance was not spotless. It was something more useful than another escape: productive early, efficient throughout and decisive at the finish.

Stokes Gave Army More Than One Problem

Stokes completed 29 of 36 passes for 371 yards and 4 touchdowns without an interception. He added 30 rushing yards and a touchdown, directing an offense that finished with 554 yards.

The receiving production spread the assignment. Hayes caught 9 passes for 86 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tipton added 86 yards on 5 catches. Davis produced 75 yards and 2 touchdowns on 4 receptions, while Burnside contributed 5 catches for 51 yards. Army could not make one receiver disappear and expect the offense to disappear with him.

Memphis also maintained a useful running game. Carter rushed for 96 yards and 2 touchdowns on 23 attempts. Covey added 57 yards on 9 carries. Together with Stokes, they supplied 183 rushing yards. The Tigers did not need one part of the offense to rescue the other. Both contributed.

The Difference Was Finishing Possessions

Memphis converted 11 of 15 third downs and scored touchdowns on all 6 red-zone trips. Army converted 3 of 10 third downs and finished 3 of 4 in the red zone. That was the difference between collecting yards and repeatedly turning them into scoring possessions.

The Tigers led 14–7 after the opening quarter and 28–14 at halftime. Davis’ 26-yard touchdown reception extended the lead to 35–14 in the 3rd quarter. Army still found substantial production on the ground. The Black Knights rushed for 320 yards on 51 attempts, averaging 6.3 yards per carry. That belongs in the review, regardless of the final margin. Memphis did not control every part of the game.

What the Tigers did was prevent Army’s rushing success from becoming enough scoring to match their offense. They also intercepted 2 passes and limited the Black Knights to 45 passing yards.

The Fourth Quarter Removed the Suspense

Army cut the deficit to 35–22 before the final period. Memphis still had work to do. Stokes completed a 12-play, 92-yard drive with a rushing touchdown at the 5:37 mark. Carter added a 3-yard touchdown with 1:38 remaining, finishing a 7-play scoring possession that consumed 3:33.

The Tigers did not merely protect their advantage. They increased it. That finish moves Memphis to 7–2 overall and 4–1 in the American, with a more complete performance to place inside its conference and broader G6 evaluation.

The corrections remain real. Army’s rushing total cannot be ignored, and Memphis lost a fumble. But the defining sequence was different. The Tigers established an early lead, kept converting, and scored the final 14 points. Memphis has already demonstrated that it can recover from trouble. Against Army, it showed how much better the night can look when recovery is not the starting point.
