Bryson Bows Out in Mexico

Bryson DeChambeau’s week in Mexico City ended with a hard pivot from competing to protecting his body, as the Crushers GC captain shut it down before the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City because of a nagging wrist issue. Instead of a Sunday charge at altitude, he chose caution and a longer‑view approach to his season.

In a statement, DeChambeau explained exactly why he was stepping away. “I experienced some discomfort in my wrist during yesterday’s round and have decided to withdraw from the final round of LIV Golf Mexico City to prevent further injury,” he said, making it clear this was about avoiding something more serious. It was plainly not the way he had drawn up the week, and he admitted as much: “Not how I wanted this week to go, but wishing the Crushers a strong finish.” Even as he pulled himself out, he pushed his focus back onto his teammates and what they still had in front of them. He closed by turning the page almost in real time: “I’m going to take a few days to get evaluated and hope to be ready for LIV Golf Virginia.”

In the course of the event, it never really tilted his way. His play over the first two rounds showed flashes of the power‑driven, analytical style that has defined his career, but not the sustained run of birdies he usually expects from himself. At altitude, on a demanding setup, he spent more time managing situations than attacking pins. The wrist discomfort that surfaced during the second day only added to that uphill climb. By the time the issue became too much to ignore, the smarter play was to listen to his body rather than force 18 more holes.

His frustration during the week wasn’t solely about the injury. At different points in Mexico City, DeChambeau’s emotions bubbled over, whether it was reacting to lies he didn’t like or grappling with how the course was presenting itself. For a player who thrives on control of his swing, his numbers, and his environment—those moments added another layer to a tournament that felt out of sync from the start. The withdrawal, then, was less a surprise and more the final note of a week that never found its rhythm.

Stepping away now, though, sets up what comes next. DeChambeau’s comments about taking a few days to get evaluated and aiming for LIV Golf Virginia frame the decision as a short reset rather than a long-term concern. For a power player whose entire game is built around speed and force, a healthy wrist is non‑negotiable. Pulling out of Mexico City might sting in the moment, but it gives him the best chance to return at full strength, with both his body and his season still very much intact.
