Idaho Needed One Second. That Was Enough.

An 0-4 team beat the FCS No. 1 on the last play. The streak is over. The season is not crowned.

Idaho Needed One Second. That Was Enough.

Idaho did not need a season. It needed one second, one throw, and the two-point run that followed.

The Clock Was the Opponent

Idaho came in 0-4. Montana State came in as the FCS No. 1, riding a 19-game winning streak. Friday night in Moscow ended with Idaho 35, Montana State 34. The Vandals are 1-4 and 1-1 in the Big Sky. The Bobcats are 5-1 and 2-1. None of that is the story until you know how the clock died. Noah West-Baranco was tackled at the Montana State 25, one second was put back on the board, and Montana State called timeout before Idaho could snap it. That is not a fluke paragraph. That is a defense that knew what was coming and still could not stop it.

The drive covered 80 yards in 49 seconds. Joshua Wood threw a 25-yard touchdown to Ryan Jezioro with no time left. Then Wood ran up the middle for the two-point conversion. A Hail Mary that ties is a memory. A Hail Mary plus the two points is a win. Idaho did not settle for the roar. It took the point that made 35-34 the only score that mattered.

This is a winning window because the last snap changed the identity of the night, not because Idaho is suddenly a finished team. A team that was 0-4 on Friday afternoon does not become a national champion on Friday night. It becomes the team that ended someone else’s streak. That is enough for The Winning Time. It is not enough for a parade.

Wood Threw It. Then He Ran It.

Wood finished 19 of 25 for 315 yards and two touchdowns. Jezioro had career highs of 147 receiving yards and two scores. Those lines matter because the last play was not a prayer from a quarterback who had been missing all night. He had been hitting. The final throw was the loudest version of a night he was already having. The two-point run was the part a highlight will crop if you let it. Do not crop it. The touchdown tied the feeling. The run won the game.

Wood also has seven rushing touchdowns on the season. That is why the conversion was not a cute call. It was a quarterback they already trusted with the ball in his hands near the goal line. Montana State had just used a timeout. It still had to watch him keep it. A winning window is often a team finding the one thing it can still do when the other team knows the play. Idaho found two things in a row.

The fair limit sits right next to the hero line. One quarterback night does not erase 0-4. One receiver’s career high does not make the defense a lock. The Winning Time is the finish, and the finish was real. The next opponent will not line up shocked that Idaho exists. It will line up knowing Wood can throw for 300 and still run the point that decides it. That is the scouting report. It is also the compliment.

What the Streak Ending Actually Means

Nineteen wins in a row is a fact about Montana State, and it is the reason the rest of the country has to care about Moscow on a Friday. A No. 1 team does not lose a streak like that on a normal snap. It loses it when the last second is gifted back and the home quarterback uses it. The hangover belongs to the Bobcats. The window belongs to Idaho. Those are different articles, and this one refuses to write both.

The counterpoint is the record. Idaho is 1-4. A last-play win over the No. 1 team is the biggest thing that has happened to the Vandals this season, and it is still one win. Fans who turn Friday into a new identity will be early. Fans who treat it like a cute FCS footnote will be late. The right size is the size of the play. It was enormous. It was also one night.

Carry this into the week as the proof that the map is not only the teams that were supposed to win. Georgia can hold serve on Saturday and Idaho can still be the result people remember from Friday. That range is the point. The last snap in Moscow is The Winning Time. Nothing that happened later on Saturday takes it back.
