Gaby López is three shots off the lead after a 5-under 66, giving the former Razorback a clear chance to play her way into Sunday contention at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship.
López Carries the Arkansas Title-Chase Hopes Into Saturday
Gaby López did not leave Friday with the lead. She left with something that may be just as valuable at Pinnacle Country Club: a clear understanding of what the tournament will require.
López shot a 5-under 66 in the opening round of the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, placing her three shots behind leader Yuna Nishimura. Nishimura’s 63 leads Yu Liu by one stroke, while 10 players are tied at 6 under. López sits in the next group at 5 under, close enough to make a move but surrounded by a crowded chase.
Her scorecard was built on five birdies, one bogey, 11 greens in regulation and 25 putts. Beginning on No. 10, López played six straight pars before birdies at Nos. 16 and 17 gave her momentum. She added three more birdies after the turn, including back-to-back birdies at Nos. 7 and 8.
The score itself is important. The mindset behind it could matter even more Saturday.
“I feel that it demands a lot of patience because there is a lot of birdie opportunities out there and everyone is making them,” López told 4 Star Sports Media after Friday’s round.
It is the right diagnosis for Pinnacle. Players produced an 8-under 63, a 7-under 64, and a deep group at 6 under in the first round. A player can make birdies and still lose ground. A single bogey can be magnified because so many competitors are playing aggressively.
López said the response is to avoid reacting emotionally to the leaderboard.
“Stay patient and be aggressive and stay committed,” she told 4 Star Sports Media.
That approach will be tested Saturday. López tees off at 12:59 p.m. from No. 1 alongside Auston Kim and Mao Saigo. By the time her group starts, the morning wave may have lowered the number she needs to chase or allowed Nishimura’s lead to grow.
The goal is not necessarily to take the lead before Saturday ends. The goal is to stay within a realistic Sunday range. In a 54-hole tournament, players do not have time to recover from a bad second round. López needs a score that keeps her in touch with the leaders and gives her a chance to begin the final round thinking about winning, not simply climbing the board.
Her Arkansas connection makes that position more meaningful. López is one of several former Razorbacks competing at Pinnacle, but she begins Round 2 as the group’s strongest title threat. Reagan Zibilski starts at 4 under and Brooke Matthews at 2 under, creating multiple Arkansas storylines, yet López remains closest to the tournament’s center.
Saturday will show whether her Friday 66 was the start of a larger push. If she remains within a few shots of the lead, Sunday could become a championship-day story with a former Razorback at its heart.
