In a thrilling display of resilience, the Memphis Tigers (4-0) overcame an 18-point deficit to secure a dramatic 32-31 upset victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks (2-2, 0-1 SEC) on Saturday at a sold-out Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, marking the program’s first capacity crowd since November 2, 2019. The 39,861 fans witnessed the Tigers’ largest comeback since 2020 and the biggest by any FBS team this season, extending Memphis’ winning streak to eight games—the longest active streak in the FBS.
Memphis Defends Home Turf With Ribbing of Razorbacks
The game started with Arkansas asserting dominance, building a commanding 28-10 lead by the second quarter. However, Memphis’ relentless spirit and offensive firepower turned the tide. The Tigers’ offense, which has now scored at least 20 points in 44 consecutive games—the nation’s longest active streak—found its rhythm in the second half. Running back Sutton Smith was the catalyst, electrifying the crowd with a career-high 148 rushing yards, including a pivotal 64-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that gave Memphis the lead for good.

Quarterback Brendon Lewis complemented Smith’s performance, rushing for 103 yards and two touchdowns, marking the most rushing yards by a Memphis quarterback in a game in at least three decades. The offensive line paved the way for a season-high 290 rushing yards, the most by the Tigers since 2021.
Memphis’ defense played a critical role in swinging momentum. Cornerback Jaidyn Denis set an early tone with a first-quarter interception of Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green, halting a promising Razorbacks drive. The defense’s defining moment came in the final two minutes when Arkansas, trailing 32-31, drove inside the Memphis 15-yard line, poised for a potential game-winning field goal. Safety Chris Bracy delivered a game-changing strip-sack on running back Mike Washington Jr., recovering the fumble with 1:22 remaining to preserve the lead. Linebacker Kamari Wilson also shone, matching his career-high with eight tackles, an interception, and a pass breakup.

The receiving corps contributed significantly, with Cortez Braham Jr. leading the way. Braham hauled in seven catches for 102 yards, including a crucial 38-yard touchdown reception late in the first half that cut Arkansas’ lead to 28-17 at halftime. Running back Greg Desrosiers Jr., seeing his first action since the season opener, provided key carries to support the ground game.
The game’s final moments showcased Memphis’ grit. With Arkansas threatening, redshirt freshman quarterback Arrington Maiden stepped in for Lewis, who briefly left the game after losing his helmet. Maiden powered through defenders for a critical third-and-8 conversion, sealing the victory and sending the sold-out crowd into a frenzy.

This win marks Memphis’ fourth consecutive home victory over SEC opponents, joining triumphs over Mississippi State (2021) and Ole Miss (2015, 2019). The Tigers’ offensive consistency was evident, as they extended their streak of scoring at least 15 points in 82 straight home games, the second-longest active streak in the FBS. The defense, meanwhile, continued its turnover-forcing prowess, securing its 41st takeaway in the last 24 games.

Memphis now shifts focus to its American Athletic Conference opener against Florida Atlantic on September 27, with game time set for 6 pm and can be seen on ESPN2. The victory solidifies the Tigers’ status as a top Group of Five contender, showcasing their ability to compete with Power Five programs.
