The Staff Behind The Vision

When Charles Huff assembled his first Memphis staff, he did so with a clear purpose: to surround the program with teachers, recruiters, and developers who reflect his uncompromising standard. Huff has always believed that the success of a program flows through its staff as much as its players. If Memphis is to close the gap between where it is and where it aims to be, it will be because the staff, top to bottom, operates with unity, precision, and passion. At the heart of that group stand the two major coordinators, offensive coordinator Kevin Decker and defensive coordinator Lance Guidry, each of whom brings a distinct vision aligned with Huff’s mission. Around them is a set of position coaches chosen not for name recognition, but for their ability to coach hard, connect deeply, and recruit relentlessly.

Decker is the architect of the new Memphis offense, and his influence is transformative. Known for innovative thinking, tempo variation, and creative use of motion, Decker builds offenses around versatility. His philosophy revolves around forcing defenses into constant conflict, using shifts, motions, and layered route concepts to expose weaknesses. Decker’s approach elevates playmakers by putting them in advantageous situations rather than asking them to win purely through talent. For Memphis fans, this means seeing an offense that looks modern, flexible, and dangerous. Decker’s past stops prove his ability to develop quarterbacks, maximize running backs, and stretch defenses with wide-open formations. Huff hired him, knowing he could elevate Memphis’ offensive ceiling instantly.

On the other side of the ball, Lance Guidry brings fire, aggression, and an unmistakable defensive identity. Guidry is known nationally for disrupting opponents with disguised pressures, relentless pursuit, and disciplined fundamentals. His defenses attack; they do not sit back and react. With Guidry, Memphis will blitz more, hit harder, and play sharper. He coaches with intensity that shapes the mentality of an entire defense. Guidry emphasizes communication, eye discipline, and physical tackling. His track record of turning underrated defenders into all-conference performers fits perfectly with Huff’s emphasis on development. When Guidry’s units take the field, opponents feel discomfort before the ball even snaps.

But Huff’s vision extends beyond his coordinators. His position coaches form the connective tissue of the program, the day-to-day teachers who ensure players grow. The offensive line coach embodies the physicality Huff demands. His coaching style emphasizes leverage, hand placement, and footwork fundamentals. He understands the Tigers must dominate the trenches to reach elite levels, and his room will be built on toughness and precision. Running backs work with a demanding technician who stresses ball security, vision, and finishing through contact, qualities essential in Huff’s run-first mentality. Wide receivers learn from a detail-obsessed coach who sharpens route running, timing, and competitive toughness. His approach produces receivers who create space with technique, not just speed.

On defense, the line coach trains edge players and interior linemen to win hand battles, penetrate gaps, and play with high motor. His drills emphasize explosiveness and control. Linebackers are taught spatial intelligence and disciplined pursuit by a coach who breaks down reads and reactions with clarity. The secondary coach serves as a tactician who builds confident, fundamentally sound defensive backs capable of executing Guidry’s demanding coverage schemes. Each defensive assistant must install instincts and discipline, ensuring the Tigers excel in both man and zone concepts.

Recruiting is where Huff’s staff truly distinguishes itself. Each assistant carries a dual role: coach and recruiter. They build relationships across Memphis high schools, where trust and presence matter. They travel through Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, and Louisiana, identifying players overlooked by bigger programs but perfectly suited for the Memphis identity. They evaluate relentlessly, seeking athletes with high ceilings and strong character. Huff demands that his staff recruit with purpose, not desperation. Offers are not handed out casually; they are earned through research and projection.

Decker’s presence boosts offensive recruiting significantly. Quarterbacks want to play for innovative coordinators, and Decker is one of the most respected play designers in the Group of Five. His system attracts backs, receivers, and tight ends who want touches in dynamic formations. Meanwhile, Guidry is a magnet for defensive prospects who crave toughness and aggression. Defensive backs gravitate toward his track record of development. Linebackers relish the chance to blitz. Edge rushers see a coordinator who will unleash them.

Another strength of Huff’s staff is emotional intelligence. He intentionally hires assistants who can connect with players. The modern athlete needs coaches who communicate authentically, teach clearly, and push consistently without alienating. Huff looks for coaches with strong teaching ability, men who can explain complex concepts in simple language. The result is a staff capable of elevating raw talent quickly.

With Decker and Guidry framing the vision and position coaches reinforcing the daily standard, Memphis’ staff is not built to simply compete. It is built to develop, adapt, and outwork opponents. Huff knows closing the gap requires alignment, and his staff is aligned from top to bottom.
