The Memphis Tigers return to FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field on Tuesday night looking for a spark to close out their five-game homestand. First pitch against Arkansas State is set for 6:05 p.m., marking the 106th all-time meeting between the two regional rivals. Memphis (8-18, 2-4 American) owns a 68-37 edge in the series but has dropped the last two matchups, including an 8-6 defeat at home last April. Arkansas State (18-9, 5-4 Sun Belt) enters fresh off a home series win over James Madison and will aim to continue its early-season surge under head coach Tommy Raffo.

For Memphis, this midweek contest offers a chance to reset before heading back into conference play — and perhaps to recapture some of the energy that carried the Tigers through last week’s upset of No. 18 Ole Miss.

Searching for Consistency at the Plate

The Tigers’ weekend against Wichita State was a microcosm of their season so far — flashes of brilliance mixed with bouts of inconsistency. After being limited to just six hits in a series-opening loss Friday, Memphis roared back Saturday with a run-rule victory fueled by timely offense and a dominant mound performance. But on Sunday, familiar struggles resurfaced as the Shockers used a pair of multi-run innings to take control early and never looked back. Still, the Tigers’ offense has shown dangerous potential when it clicks.

A balanced lineup has produced 31 home runs from 12 different players, evidence of both depth and versatility. Senior center fielder Michael Gupton has anchored the power production with seven homers — sixth-most in the American Athletic Conference — while posting a .635 slugging percentage. Designated hitter James Smith IV, a 2025 MLB Draft pick, has been one of the league’s top run producers with 31 RBIs, also ranking sixth in the conference. His presence in the middle of the order has given the Tigers much-needed stability. Meanwhile, Shane Cox has been the model of consistency. The junior infielder leads Memphis in batting average (.333), hits (33), and extra-base hits (13). He’s recorded at least one hit in 21 of the team’s 26 games, often setting the tone early in contests.

Perhaps the most defining element of Memphis’ offensive approach this season, however, has been its aggression on the basepaths. The Tigers have swiped 62 bases — tops in the American and 31st nationally. Senior Freddy Rodriguez has been nearly unstoppable, going 20-for-22 in stolen-base attempts to lead the conference and crack the national top 10. That ability to pressure opposing defenses might be a key in tilting Tuesday’s game in Memphis’ favor.

Rushing Draws the Start Against Surging Red Wolves

On the hill, Memphis will hand the ball to left-hander Logan Rushing (0-1, 6.00 ERA). The sophomore will look to replicate the poise and efficiency shown by the Tigers’ staff in last week’s 6-2 win over ranked Ole Miss — a victory powered by shutdown relief and opportunistic hitting. For Arkansas State, redshirt freshman Houston Tomlinson gets the nod. The right-hander has appeared sparingly this season, logging 3.2 innings without allowing an earned run. His limited workload adds a variable to what has otherwise been a steady Red Wolves pitching staff. Arkansas State’s success this spring has been built around its arms. The team ranks near the top nationally in several key categories: 13th in ERA (3.38), 11th in WHIP (1.18), and third in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (2.97).

That combination of command and efficiency has helped the Red Wolves hang with some of the Sun Belt’s most potent lineups. At the plate, Lane Walton has been the power source, with 10 homers and 33 RBIs, while Cason Campbell has contributed balance in the order with a .338 average and strong on-base numbers. Patrick Engskov has provided additional spark, tallying seven doubles and eight steals to give Arkansas State multiple ways to manufacture runs. That offensive trio will test a Memphis staff still searching for sustained rhythm. When the Tigers’ pitching holds steady, they’ve proven capable of competing with anyone in the region — but lapses in control and defensive miscues have often flipped close games in the wrong direction.

What’s at Stake

For Memphis, Tuesday is about more than just padding the win column. It’s about momentum. The Tigers will head on the road for a critical stretch of conference games, and a strong showing against a quality Sun Belt opponent could reignite confidence. Arkansas State, meanwhile, enters with a chance to keep climbing in its own league standings while extending a recent run of solid play. The Red Wolves have already secured five home series victories and now look to add a statement road win to their resume. When two programs with long-standing ties and contrasting trajectories meet under the lights at FedExPark, emotion tends to run high. Expect the Tigers to lean on their speed, and the Red Wolves to rely on power and pitching precision — a classic mid-south matchup that could hinge on which team executes its identity best.
