Saturday at Pinnacle: López Has a Title Path, but the Cut Adds Pressure Everywhere
Saturday at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship carries two separate kinds of pressure. At the top, Yuna Nishimura tries to defend a one-shot lead after opening with an 8-under 63. Yu Liu is one shot back at 7 under, and 10 players are tied at 6 under. Former Razorback Gaby López is at 5 under, just three behind Nishimura, and begins the day with a viable path into Sunday’s title chase.
At the other end of the relevant scoreboard, the cut line looms. The tournament will reduce its 144-player field to the top 65 players and ties after Round 2, ending the week for anyone who falls outside the official number.
López enters Saturday from the more favorable side of that divide. Her 66 included five birdies and only one bogey, keeping her close enough to challenge the leaders. She tees off at 12:59 p.m. from No. 1 alongside Auston Kim and Mao Saigo.
Her Saturday task is not to chase one specific score. It is to remain in touch with the leaders. A crowded leaderboard means a solid score alone may not move her far, but a second straight round in the mid-60s could position her for a final-round opportunity in Arkansas.
López’s Friday perspective is the guide.
“There is a lot of birdie opportunities out there, and everyone is making them,” she told 4 Star Sports Media. “So being able to kind of bubble up, stay patient and be aggressive and stay committed.”
That will be the balance throughout Round 2. The course is producing birdies, but players who become impatient trying to match every score can create the type of bogey that costs several places.
The Arkansas board offers several other stories. Reagan Zibilski starts at 4 under after a 67 that included seven birdies and a double bogey at No. 18. She tees off at 12:26 p.m. from No. 1. Saturday will show whether she can build on the scoring upside from Friday while erasing the late-round mistake from her memory.
Brooke Matthews begins at 2 under after hitting 14 greens in regulation in Friday’s 69. The Rogers native starts at 12:15 p.m. from No. 10. Her local connection and steady opening give her a clear opportunity: more putting conversion could turn a solid start into a hometown weekend story.
Maria Fassi begins at even par and Maria José Marin at 3 over. Fassi starts at 12:37 p.m. from No. 10; Marin begins at the same time from No. 1. For both, the cut changes the tone of the day. Fassi made six birdies Friday but gave back too many strokes with bogeys. Marin’s fairways, greens and bunker saves offered encouragement, but her 30 putts and late bogeys left less room for error Saturday.
The Saturday question is straightforward: can Nishimura turn a one-shot lead into separation, or will Pinnacle create an even more compressed board heading into Sunday?
For Arkansas fans, the question is layered. Can López maintain a championship position? Can Zibilski or Matthews produce the day’s biggest move? Can Fassi and Marin play their way safely through the cut?
The answers will create the final-round field—and likely determine who local fans should follow most closely Sunday.
