Realignment Did Not End With The Power Conferences
College football realignment has spent years being told through the same few schools. Texas. Oklahoma. USC. UCLA. Oregon. Washington.
But the most revealing moves may be happening beneath the Power Four, where realignment is a fight over survival, access and relevance.
Texas State is now a Pac-12 program. Louisiana Tech is now in the Sun Belt. That is not a footnote. It is a reminder that there are no permanent seats in college football. There are only better opportunities, stronger partners and the fear that somebody else will move before you do.
Texas State Chose The Ceiling
Texas State joins Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Oregon State, San Diego State, Utah State and Washington State in the rebuilt Pac-12.
The Bobcats open their new era at Texas. The move is about a larger platform, more national visibility and an opportunity to be part of a conference that believes its future can be bigger than a traditional Group of Six ceiling.
The risk is clear. Texas State gave up regional rivalries, familiar travel and a stable Sun Belt identity. The Pac-12 gives the Bobcats more opportunity, but it also gives them more pressure.
Louisiana Tech Gets A Better Fit
Louisiana Tech replaces Texas State in the Sun Belt. The Bulldogs now share a conference with more regional opponents, more natural recruiting overlap and a league that has built a football identity around physical play and programs that expect to matter.
Conference USA gave Louisiana Tech a home. The Sun Belt gives it an argument. The move only works if Louisiana Tech embraces the league’s expectations. There is no extended adjustment period in a conference full of programs that believe every game can be a statement.
The Realignment Fight Is About Access
The playoff has changed the stakes. A conference champion cannot merely win its league. It has to build a résumé, create credibility and protect a brand that can matter when the postseason conversation begins.
Texas State believes the Pac-12 gives it more access. Louisiana Tech believes the Sun Belt gives it a better fit. Every other Group of Six school is watching.
