The American, Sun Belt and Conference USA do not receive endless opportunities to prove themselves. Week 1 gives their best programs a chance to force the rest of college football to pay attention.

G6 Week 1: Opportunity Does Not Wait
The Group of Six enters every season with the same frustrating truth. There are talented teams in the American, Sun Belt and Conference USA. There are veteran quarterbacks, experienced coaches and programs capable of beating Power Four teams on the right night.
But the sport does not give those programs unlimited chances to prove it. That is why Week 1 matters.
Memphis Cannot Get Distracted
Memphis already has a meaningful road win after beating UNLV. Now Arkansas State comes to town before the Tigers travel to Boise State. That makes Saturday dangerous. Arkansas State has regional motivation. Memphis has the expectation. The Tigers should be better, but that does not matter if they allow the Red Wolves to hang around through halftime.
Memphis needs to establish the run game, protect the football and create enough early separation that the game does not become a test of nerves. The Tigers do not need style points. They need a clean win and confidence that they can travel.
The American Has Real Chances
The American opens with several important tests. UAB visits Illinois. North Texas travels to Indiana. East Carolina goes to Alabama. Tulane faces Duke. Tulsa hosts Oklahoma State.
Nobody expects the American to win every game. The standard is to make Power Four opponents earn their wins.
UAB has to match Illinois physically. North Texas has to avoid being overwhelmed by Indiana’s depth. East Carolina has to survive Alabama’s early surge. Tulane has an opportunity against a Duke program good enough to make a win matter but vulnerable enough to be beaten. The American’s advantage is volatility. One experienced quarterback, one special-teams touchdown or two timely turnovers can flip an afternoon.
The Sun Belt Has A New Look
The Sun Belt looks different in 2026. Texas State is now in the Pac-12. Louisiana Tech is now in the Sun Belt. That makes Louisiana Tech’s first season in the conference one of the league’s most interesting stories. The Bulldogs begin a new chapter against Northwestern State before the schedule gets far more difficult.
Arkansas State has the opportunity to make a statement at Memphis. Marshall gets a national road test at Penn State. The Sun Belt’s best teams never walk into major stadiums hoping to lose respectfully. They walk in expecting the favorite to prove it deserves the fear.
Conference USA Needs A Headline
Conference USA has lost Louisiana Tech and must create a fresh identity. The league needs more than moral victories. It needs a team to create a headline, force a Power Four opponent into the fourth quarter and prove the conference is still producing programs worth watching.
Opportunity does not wait in the Group of Six. Neither does the scoreboard.
