Every team opens conference play Thursday night, and the season begins with a title favorite, two new coaching eras and one heavyweight quarterback matchup.
Six Games, Zero Warmups: GAC Week 1 Starts Now
The Great American Conference does not believe in easing into the season. Every team opens league play Thursday night. No warmup. No nonconference tune-up. No waiting until October for the games to matter. The 2026 race begins with six conference games and a chance for every program to establish a tone.
The headliner is East Central at Ouachita Baptist. The toss-up is Southwestern Oklahoma State at Arkansas Tech. The favorite begins in Searcy. And the rest of the league gets an immediate chance to prove it is more than a preseason projection.
Harding Opens With the Target
Northwestern Oklahoma State travels to Harding for a 6 p.m. kickoff in Searcy.
Harding begins the Roddy Mote era after a 15-1 season, an undefeated GAC run and a trip to the Division II national championship game. Andrew Miller and Braden Jay give the Bisons the most dangerous returning backfield in the league. Justin Sobczak and Jordan Mays lead a defense that expects to suffocate opponents.
Northwestern begins under Jerry Partridge, which makes the Rangers’ opener about more than the final score. Jacob Jones must help the offense stay on the field. Aiden Lewis leads a defense tasked with the impossible: slowing Harding’s rushing attack for four quarters.
The key is whether Northwestern can force long-yardage situations, create a turnover and keep the game from becoming a Harding avalanche before halftime.
6 p.m. Games Have Their Own Stakes
Henderson State visits Southern Nazarene in Bethany. The Reddies have one of the league’s more complete rosters, but Austin Ledbetter’s first game at quarterback is the obvious story. He has help in Gabe Hernandez up front, Taylin Paskel outside and a defense with enough experience to keep Henderson in control.
Southern Nazarene needs Jaxon Worley and Karomo Collins to make the offense more balanced. Brandon Hobbs and Wyatt Brown have to create pressure and find a way to turn the game into a fourth-quarter fight.
Southeastern Oklahoma State travels to Arkansas-Monticello in another 6 p.m. game. The Savage Storm bring a veteran defense, led by Kamron Fields, William Wallis and Jordan Hood. Their question is offensive consistency. Luke Hohenberger and the offensive line need to give Southeastern enough support to let the defense dictate the game.
Arkansas-Monticello begins the Gary Goff era at home. Drew Forkner and Ghee Evans are the names to watch. The Weevils need early energy, an offense that can stay on schedule and enough defensive disruption to keep the home crowd invested.
7 p.m. Slate Brings the Heat
Southern Arkansas travels to Oklahoma Baptist at 7 p.m. The Muleriders have the veteran edge, led by CJ Montes, Jacob Trussell, Matt Elder, Walteze Champ and Carter Wells. They want to play clean football, establish physical control and avoid allowing the Bison to create chaos.
Oklahoma Baptist needs Nick Harris to make plays early. The Bison also have to prove they can defend the run and protect the ball. If they do, they can make the final quarter interesting.
East Central at Ouachita Baptist is the marquee game. Tre Nichols and Carter McElhany lead an OBU offense with championship ambitions. Sergio Kennedy and Kaden Jones lead an ECU passing game capable of putting pressure on anyone. The key matchup is ECU’s pass protection against an OBU defense led by Romelo Bell and Justin Crutchmer.
The best toss-up is SWOSU at Arkansas Tech. Arkansas Tech has home field, 15 returning starters and an experienced defense led by Tyler Mosley and Tyrique Jones. SWOSU counters with 17 returning starters, Baylor Nash at receiver and a defense led by Keshaun Jackson.
It feels like a game that will come down to turnovers, field position and who makes the final stop. That is the GAC opening night. Six games. Twelve teams. No warmups. The gauntlet begins Thursday.
